Now you might have heard a million versions of the same topic from almost all bloggers but everyone will have something new to say, a new rant, a new revelation, a new perspective and Hey, it’s a free country so I am going to type on my two cents on it too. Presenting, “The truth about being a blogger”- created, conceptualized and scripted by Your truly.
A quick disclaimer: ALL THE VIEWS EXPRESSED ARE PERSONAL WITH NO INTENTION TO HURT OR DEMEAN ANY PERSON, COMMUNITY OR GROUP. No animals were harmed in the writing of this piece.
For all those who are only too aware of the terms #ootd #goodvibes #peaceout #slaying #dying #tbh #hotaf , please know that #ideal is a very very superlative term in this terrain. And there is a lot of difference in what you see on screen and the reality.
Okay so I am going to drop a few truth bombs about my vision and life as an influencer since the last 4 years-
1) ITS NOT AN EASY JOB
Blogging looks like a lot of fun with those fancy pictures, beautiful backdrops, instagrammed food and travel pics, goodies, events, celebs and the so called fun! But do you know that we sometimes get up at 3.30 or 4 am to capture pictures in the right light and the shoot can last upto 12-20 hrs? We climb up crazy rocks and jump in cold water for that perfect shot many times? That videos and pictures take sophisticated tools and editing techniques to look that good? That captions use up a lot of brain? That blogs are not created by COPY +PASTE from the internet? That commuting time for an appearance of 15 mins at an event can take upto 2-3 hrs for one side? CALL THAT EASY. We have to stay hooked online to keep an eye on trends, we have to read a lot before anything on our feed goes live for authenticity and believable purposes, we have to research for hours before posting something as our accounts are always public, we have to deal with hate, trolls and negativity a lot of times! We have to chase brands and Prs for our hard earned money for months! We chase photographers for timely delivery of pictures and a lot of times, there are invariable defaults that bring all the hardwork down the drain, not so glam anymore are we now? #storyofmylife
2) IT CAN OR CANNOT BE A WELL PAYING JOB
Well, like every trade, bloggers and instagrammers, especially now that you get a dime a dozen everywhere, the money could vary from eye popping millions to a few thousands per month. Its a freelancing field and you have to BE pretty good to survive, every day. You have to slog till you have carved a niche, a dedicated audience that stays put and grows as you do. Agreed some people DO GET PLAIN LUCKY and create trash content and yet seem way well off than you do, but then again, isn’t that in every sphere? And yes, BARTER is a subjective term. #goodvibesonly
3) IT CAN DRASTICALLY ALTER YOUR LIFE
All that make believe, fan following, success at a young age has affected a lot of young influencers around me. I have seen girls I met 3 years back as humble, inquisitive followers making it big and then becoming almost snobbish and vain and borderline mean too. All the positivity you seem to see on their gram, well, its in virtual space. And though it doesn’t apply to everyone, it does apply to a lot of them. Fame does come at a price. #keepingitreal or not.
4) ITS EASY TO GET LOST IN THE HERD
When you see picture perfect lives day in and out on your feed, its very easy to become disoriented and lose the line between what’s real and what’s not. Recently, a fellow influencer, who had a well manicured feed that made it look like she had it all, committed suicide due to depression, so NO ONE has the perfect life. No one. And its so easy to become a victim of someone else’s idea of perfection that girls end up doing all sorts of strange antics to become popular. Almost 90% of social media pictures are make believe, ideal representations of real life of those influencers. Yes a lot of influencers will show you the reality behind the scenes but believe it or not, it may or may not be so real at all. Who wears make up to the gym for real! #wediditforthegram
5) IT REQUIRES CONSTANT UPGRADING
Like all your apps need upgrades every now and then, an influencer’s style, life, feed needs an upgrade every now and then. One has to come up with innovative ideas to express through words and pictures, otherwise the content will become repetitive, stale and uninteresting and you can say bye bye to your popularity. #stayingontrend
6) FAKING IT
Yes, a lot of FAKE is making its rounds on social media. Why? Because we live in a fast paced world and need instant results, instant gratification or we succumb to the pressure of SAB KRTE HAIN MAIN KYU NAHI? But eventually, if the fake cannot live it up to the expected reality, one wilts away. Also, there is a lot of make- up, airbrushing, art of posing and photo shopping in those perfect looking pictures, so don’t think influencers are flawless angels created without any body, skin woes. #stayrealevenwhenyoufakeit
7) THERE ARE NO BREAKS
Being a social media influencer means you will have to MARRY your phone and laptop. Literally. The food will get cold by the time you get its shot, the make up will need a thousand touch ups, your skin will get damaged constantly with all that sun exposure, oddly long hrs of staring into the screen, you will lose friends and sometimes important family relations to stay committed to this marriage but then as responsible grown ups, we all need to fight this battle and win or we stand to lose real people to virtual reality. #weworkevenwhenwedont
8) YOU CANNOT PLEASE EVERYONE
Sometimes your most hard worked project will fall flat and sometimes your most stupid selfie will win more hearts. Social media and its makers have a crazy sense of humor and they play with emotions and your thoughts very easily and quite frequently . There will be hate comments, there will be heart breaking dms, cheapos hitting on you, women pulling you down, trolls and what not. You have to be prepared, keep trying and keep posting your best if you really want to make it. #embracechange
Okay I seem to have poured out a lot today, there is a lot left still but I guess I should stop since this is a majorly PMS induced article that I might regret later. If you have read it till here, congratulations, you are now aware of the real #bts and I would love to hear from you in the comments below.
Thanks for always sticking around!
